Trying to find the best dairy-free meals in Antigua, Guatemala? I got you covered! While staying in Antigua, Guatemala, I went to so many restaurants and cafes, looking for the best dairy-free meals. I have compiled some of my favorite restaurants and dishes here, to make your next trip to Antigua, Guatemala that much easier!

1. Pappy’s BBQ

Meat

Cost: Q36 – 395

An obsolete amazing BBQ spot in Antigua, Guatemala! If you enjoy Texas BBQ this is the restaurant for you. When I first visited Pappy’s BBQ, due to a miscommunication, I was under the impression that all of their meat was cooked with butter. After reconfirming, it turns out that their meat is completely dairy-free. For their side dishes, order the white bread without butter, and avoid the green beans and corn, which are not dairy-free. I tried the BBQ Plate and Big Boy Plate, which come with two sides, white bread, sauces, pickles, and onions. You can choose two types of meat, including pulled pork, old spice sausage, ribs, brisket, chopped beef, wings, or smoked chicken. I thoroughly enjoyed the ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. For sides, I opted for fries and baked beans, which were both delicious and dairy-free.

2. Samsara

Vegan, Vegetarian

Cost: Q37 – 50

Samsara is one of my favorite restaurants in Antigua, Guatemala, due to its affordable pricing and delicious menu options. Being a vegan/vegetarian restaurant means that the majority of their dishes are already dairy-free or easy to adjust. I was shocked at the quality of the Quinoa Shawarma wrap, and found their fermented cashew cheese spread to be amazingly creamy and savory! The meals are also quite filling and are made with fresh natural ingredients. I dined at Samsara a couple of times and always felt light after a meal, even when eating typically heavier dishes, such as bagels and wraps. Although I often enjoy eating meat, sometimes a vegan or vegetarian option can be just as good, if you find the right chef. I would say Samsara fits the bill.

3. Once Once

Vegan

Cost: Q40 – 90

As a vegan restaurant, Once Once is a great option for those looking for a dairy-free alternative. Once Once has many meals that dairy-free individuals rarely get to try, such as a dairy-free creamy fettuccini, cashew cheese stuffed ravioli, smoked mac n’cheese, creme brûlée, and chocolate cake! Finding creamy dairy-free pasta is difficult, no matter where you go, so I was ready to indulge. Even though the price was a bit outside my budget, it was hard to resist their menu options. Although I wouldn’t say their vegan ravioli is as good as one with dairy, it was still quite satisfying. Their dessert selection is phenomenal, and the chocolate cake is to die for!

4. Union Cafe

Meat, Vegan, Vegetarian

Cost: Q45 – 60

Union Cafe is a popular spot for tourists and backpackers. With a laid-back and hippie vibe, Union Cafe this a great casual spot to grab a meal or even just a coffee. They have a few dairy-free options on the menu, including vegan pancakes. As pancakes often contain dairy, I was excited to give them a try. Although I found the lettuce topping to be a bit strange, overall the dish was very good and I would try it again. They also have vegan pesto pasta, bowls, tacos, and wraps, that can be all made dairy-free. Their breakfast also includes a free coffee or juice, which is a nice touch for our budget-friendly folks.

5. Toko Baru

Meat, Vegan, Vegetarian

Cost: Q20 – 49

Toko Baru Is a great affordable option for those searching for a dairy-free budget meal in Antigua, Guatemala. Not only do they have vegan and vegetarian options, but many of their wraps and bowls are already dairy-free. I thoroughly enjoyed their beef shish kabab with Middle Eastern spices. You have the option to have the dish on a plate, or in a wrap or pita. I preferred the plate option, as I found it to be more filling. They provide a yoghurt-based sauce with the dishes, that you will need to avoid. Their apple chutney though is dairy-free and adds a nice sweetness to the dish.

6. 27 Adentro

Meat, Vegan, Vegetarian

Cost: Q48 – 138

27 Adentro can accommodate individuals with many different dietary restrictions. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or a meat eater, all are welcome. I tried their pork short ribs, which were a bit too sweet for me but quite tasty otherwise. I have found that Guatemalans typically cook and serve drinks on the sweeter side. Their vegan mango cheesecake though is to die for. A creamy, sugar-free, cool mango cheesecake that both my husband and I were able to enjoy. Their dining room felt very private, and they accommodated us, even when we showed up close to closing time. I found their restaurant to be the best overall when it comes to accommodating people’s dietary needs, due to their flexible menu options.

7. Caoba Farms Restaurant

Meat, Vegan, Vegetarian

Cost: Q50 – 125

Caoba Farm Restaurant serves organic meals, with ingredients straight from their garden. As their meals and ingredients are grown and created in-house, they know what is in their dishes. Too many times I have gone to a restaurant, only for their staff to not know what the dish contains. This means you can feel a sense of relief when ordering from their menu. They also have vegetarian and vegan options available, which means they may be able to find you a suitable substitute. Please note that their hamburger buns do contain dairy. I opted for a half portion of chicken tenders and a fruit smoothie with macadamia milk.

Traveling with dietary restrictions and allergies can be difficult. Navigating foreign menus and communicating with wait staff about dietary restrictions can be stressful and overwhelming. This is why I have taken the time to investigate and find the best dairy-free meals around the world. Follow me on social media to learn more.
