Lake Atitlán is located in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range, approximately a 3 ½ hour drive from Guatemala City. Fed by two nearby rivers, Lake Atitlán is situated in a volcanic crater and is famous for being the deepest lake in Central America. In 1955 the area around the lake was labelled a National Park, and tourism started to be encouraged in the surrounding Mayan villages. Today Lake Atitlán has become a popular tourist destination for international and local travellers. Visitors and locals can access the villages by public boat from the dock at Panajachel and learn about the local Mayan culture and customs.

The temperature around Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, is steady year-round, ranging from 19°C to 25°C (50°F to 78°F). During the rainy season, from May to October, rain showers are common in the mid-afternoon to late evening. While in the dry season, from November to April, you can enjoy clear blue skies most days.
How To Get to Lake Atitlán, Guatemala?
Typically, international travelers will fly into Guatemala City and then take one of the following modes of transport to Lake Atitlán:
“Chicken Bus” (6 hours)
Local transportation buses or “Chicken Buses” are the cheapest form of transportation. Although crowded and not the most comfortable option, at only $5 USD, they are the most affordable. The bus stop leaving Guatemala City to Lake Atitlán can be found at the intersection of 21 Calle and 1A Avenida in Guatemala City. Please keep in mind that the bus will make frequent stops throughout the journey.
Shared Shuttle Bus (4 hours)
Shared shuttle buses are a popular form of transportation for international travelers. A ride costs $25 to $35 USD, making shared shuttles a safe, comfortable, and economical option. Keep in mind that there are usually no bathroom breaks.
Private Transportation (4 hours)
Private transportation is an excellent option for those looking for convenience and privacy. At $100 to $150 USD, this option is not budget-friendly but does allow for bathroom breaks and stops for snacks whenever you wish.
Helicopter (25 minutes)
If luxury and speed are your style, you can opt for a helicopter ride. A ride costs approximately $2000, making it the most expensive option but also the fastest. Please note that luggage space is limited, with a capacity of a maximum of three passengers.
