31 Best Things to Do in Antigua, Guatemala

On top of being a foodie haven, Antigua Guatemala has many fun activities and historical sites to explore. Whether you prefer the outdoors, museums, shopping or learning about Mayan culture, Antigua has it all! 

 

1..Hike Pacaya Volcano

Pacaya Volcano is on many travellers’ bucket lists! Pacaya Volcano is a great day hike, with amazing views of the surrounding mountains and towns below. Many tour agencies include the option to roast marshmallows on volcanic rock and in some cases, even a pizza! The hike is labelled moderate to difficult, so wear sturdy shoes and be in good physical health. Best experienced with a tour company, as they typically take care of transportation, food, guides and entrance fees. 

 

2. Hike Acatenango Volcano

A challenging hike, typically accomplished over two days, Acatenango is fantastic for the adventurous spirit. My husband and I hiked Acatenango during our stay in Antigua, Guatemala. Check out my article, if you want to accept the challenge!

3. Visit a History Museum

 

There are many historical museums to visit in Antigua, Guatemala. Check out one or more of these museums below:

 

Museo Nacional de Arte de Guatemala:

An amazing mix of local, national and historical artefacts, Museo Nacional de Art fully encapsulates Guatemalan history. You will also find an art gallery, souvenir shop, and bathrooms. As a bonus, access is free!

 

Antique Book Museum:

Right by the square, you will find a small museum showcasing antique books and documents from Guatemala. If you are a book lover and enjoy antique documents, a visit is a must!

 

Museo de Arte Colonial:

Only a block from the square, you will find the Museum of Colonial Art. The building can be found on the Guatemalan 100 quetzal, so make sure to bring one with you to compare. Although the museum is small, it still contains several religious paintings and sculptures, and most find the visit worthwhile. The entry fee for foreigners is Q50. 

 

Museo del Hermano Pedro:

Often described as a beautiful and peaceful oasis in the city of Antigua, Museo Del Hermano Pedro honours the work of Franciscan tertiary Hermano Pedro in the 1600s. The museum contains a church, sculptures, ruins and a relaxing garden. 

 

Holy Week Museum:

If you are interested in learning about Holy Week and the religious practices in Guatemala during this time, this is the place to go. Although a small museum, it does allow you to learn more about the religious traditions and customs of the Guatemalan people. 

 

4. Visit Historical Churches & Convents 

 

Below are the most popular churches and convents to visit while in Antigua, Guatemala.

 

Covent of La Merced & Iglesia de la Merced:

Right beside each other, you will find the beautiful Iglesia de la Merced, a church still used today and the ruins of the Convent of La Merced. Convent of La Merced was a male monastery built during the 1700s, containing a large fountain in the centre courtyard. The fountain can be viewed from above and below and is a great photography opportunity.

Antigua Guatemala Cathedral:

In front of Antigua Central Park, you will find the 16 century Antigua Guatemala Cathedral. The grounds contain a large church and ruins, which are still in the process of being restored. Behind the church, you will find an entry to see ruins and crypts for a small fee.

The Iglesia y Convento de Las Capuchinas:

The ruins of an 18th-century nunnery and one of the most visited convents in Antigua Guatemala. It is best experienced with a guide who can explain each area’s significance. Inside you will find an open courtyard, a fountain, individual living cells, a basement, and a garden.

5. Visit Antigua Central Park

Antigua Central Park is a bustling square filled with vendors, eateries, people, benches, trees and a historic fountain. Purchase souvenirs from a local merchant, or browse the market open on the weekend. With free WIFI and people-watching, it is easy to sit in the park and relax for hours on end. Festivals typically occur here in Antigua Central Park, so you may even get a chance to watch a concert or two during your visit.

6. Take a Picture at the Historic Fountain

In the centre of Antigua Central Park or Parque Central, you will find a large historic fountain. In 1773 an earthquake caused significant damage to the buildings and monuments in Antigua, resulting in a major rebuild of the city. A new fountain was erected in 1738 in Central Park and is currently enjoyed by locals and visitors today. Take a photo of yourself  in front of the fountain or have a merchant take your picture for a small charge.

7. Attend a Festival

Festivals and events occur throughout the year, whether it’s a national holiday, a religious celebration or an organized event. Check this website for a list of upcoming events. 

 

8. Visit Caoba Farms

Mainly known for its organic farm-to-table restaurant, Caoba Farms actually has many activities to offer. From farm tours, volunteering, a store, farmers market, yoga and live music, there is plenty of entertainment and activities for everyone. Spend your afternoon enjoying a macadamia milk smoothie, touring the garden or buying some local Mayan honey.

9. Participate in a Cocoa Workshop

Right by the square, you will find the Museum of Cocoa or Choco Museo. They offer 1 or 2 hour workshops, which  teach you the history and process of making Guatemalan Cacao. Browse the different chocolates and desserts or even give chocolate making a try yourself!

 

10. Visit Hobbitenango

Are you looking for a fun activity in Antigua, or are you a fan of The Lord of the Rings? Hobbitenango may be right for you! Hobbitenango is a great place for the whole family and only a 20-minute drive from Antigua. With activities such as axe throwing, archery, mini golf, fair games and the largest tree swing in Central America, there is plenty of fun to be had. There is also an artisan market, two restaurants, a cafe, bars, hiking trails and hobbit-style homes, available to rent. Entrance fee: Q50 per adult, Q30 per child, 4 – 10 years old.

11. Visit Cafe Condesa

At first, you may think Cafe Condesa is a simple cafe, but enter inside, and you will find shops, a garden and a rich history. Learn about their spooky past and try their creamy Mayan hot chocolate or decent desserts. An excerpt from their menu says: “Supposedly, one of the Counts made an unexpected return from a voyage and found his wife in an indiscretion with the butler. Rumour has it that the butler was buried alive by the angry Count. During reparations after the 1976 earthquake, the rumour was supported when a skeleton was discovered within the pantry wall…and had been buried standing up!”.

12. Hike to Cerro de la Cruz

A popular tourist attraction, Cerro de la Cruz provides an excellent viewpoint of Antigua. Located north of town, a short hike up a maintained path will bring you to the top of a hill. A large 1930s cross was erected at the top and is a popular spot for photo ops. Stands selling souvenirs and snacks are also available nearby. Please note, the site is currently under construction to improve its amenities.

13. Watch the Fireworks

Fireworks and firecrackers are a popular tradition for the Catholic church in Guatemala. Before and after church services, you can often witness church members setting off fireworks. The loud bang can be heard throughout the town and are called Bombas by locals due to their frightful bomb sound. 

 

14. Attend the Summer Amusement Park

In the summer (typically July) an amusement park comes to town. You will find rides, carnival games, food and more. Entry to the amusement park is free, with a small charge to play a game or go on a ride. When in town, you will find it located beside the bus terminal.

 

15. Visit a Coffee Farm

You have the option to book with a tour company or venture on your own. Many coffee farms will provide tours without a booking through a separate agency. My husband and I visited Bella Vista Coffee Farm, south of Antigua. There you will find a cafe, restaurant, store, tours, a farm and a large facility. To save money we walked from Antigua to Bella Vista, but a taxi or shuttle service is recommended.

16. Watch Volcano Eruption from a Rooftop

There are many rooftop bars, restaurants and cafes in Antigua, Guatemala. Although you can view the erupting volcano from street level, a rooftop provides a clear and more comfortable view point. Relax with a glass of wine or a coffee and wait for the next eruption. 

 

17. Take a Spanish Lesson

There are several excellent Spanish Schools in Antigua, Guatemala. Spanish Academy Antigua, Spanish School Don Pedro de Alvarado, and Ixchel Spanish School are all highly recommended. Take one lesson or take several and improve your communication with the locals. Guatemala is a great place to improve your Spanish language skills.

 

18. Try Authentic Guatemalan Street Food

In Parque La Merced, you will find the pathways filled with street vendors selling authentic Guatemalan street food. From paches, tacos, sandwiches, corn, empanadas, and pepian you have a variety to choose from. Vendors will typically be open for lunch and dinner. 

 

19. Visit Chichicastenango

Approximately a two-hour drive from Antigua, Guatemala, you will find Chichicastenango. One of the largest markets in Guatemala, Chichicastenango is open on Thursdays and Sundays. You can book with a tour company or venture out on your own. Either way, Chichicastenango is a great place to find souvenirs, textiles, pottery and Mayan crafts. Visiting the market provides a unique peek into local customs and culture of Guatemalans. Barter with the vendors, get lost in the stalls or see the locals negotiate their wares.  

 

20. Visit a Macadamia Farm

20 minutes from Antigua you will find Valhalla Macadamia Farm. Try the macadamia pancakes at their Oxygen Lounge, or relax with a full body massage at their Wellness Spa. Valhalla Macadamia Farms store sells a variety of macadamia oil-based creams, soaps, lotions, and chocolates. They also offer tours of the farm, where you learn how macadamia nuts are grown and processed. 

 

21. Take Pictures in a Sunflower Field

Sunflowers of Antigua is a beautiful Sunflower Farm located in Southern Antigua. A great place to spend an hour or two, inside you will find spots for taking pictures, a restaurant and many rows of sunflowers! It is best to visit in the morning and only Q10 to enter. 

 

22. Visit the Artisan Market

Located beside the bus terminal, the Artisan Market contains brightly coloured stalls filled with a variety of spices, fruits, vegetables, clothing, jewellery, pottery, Mayan crafts and much more. If shopping is not your thing, the colours, fountain, and bathrooms are often enough to attract most visitors. Be ready to negotiate, as is customary. 

 

23. Paint in the Park

Whether you prefer to draw, paint or doodle, you can find all the art supplies you need in Antigua, Guatemala. Check out Libreria La Merced, Papeleria Arriola Antigua, or La Bodegona, which has office supplies and a craft section upstairs. Once you have your supplies, pick from one of the many parks available, relax and create. 

 

24. Visit the Cemetery

Whether to pay respects or to learn more about Guatemalan culture and customs, visiting a cemetery respectfully can be a great way to honour those who have passed away. Located on the west side of town is a large cemetery. Inside you will find a big colonial church and many beautiful monuments for those who passed.

 

25. Take an ATV Mountain Tour

If walking is not your style, many agencies offer ATV Mountain Tours of Antigua. Typically, these tours include riding up to a viewpoint, sometimes even at sunset. A fun way to pass the time and blow off some steam. 

 

26. Day Trip to Lake Atitlán

Although technically not in Antigua, Lake Atitlan is a popular tourist destination for those visiting Guatemala. If you are staying in Antigua for a few days and Lake Atitlan is not on your list, a day tour can be a great way to sneak in a visit. Only a 2-hour drive from Antigua, you will find Lake Atitlan, which is named the most beautiful lake in the world. Find more information about Lake Atitlan here.

27. Go on a Food Tour

With 300+ restaurants and cafes to choose from Antigua, Guatemala, is a foodie paradise! Food tours can be a great way to experience the highlights of Guatemalan cuisine without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you prefer fine dining, street food, chocolate or coffee, there is a tour for everyone.

28. Take a Walking Tour

A walking tour is not only a great way to get exercise but is typically more affordable than using shuttles or taxis. There are many historical monuments and buildings in Antigua, and it can be hard to know which ones to visit. Take a tour and learn about the rich history of the area and the different buildings and their historical significance.  

 

29. Go Horseback Riding

45 minutes from Antigua is Finca In The Clouds, a luxury horseback riding company. Go horseback riding around the volcanos and visit their organic garden and antique ranch house. They also have cheese boards and an optional BBQ lunch, a great way to spend the day in Guatemala. 

 

30. Take a Cooking Class

After dining at restaurants in Antigua, you may be wondering how you can make these local dishes at home. A cooking class is a great way to learn more about Guatemalan cuisine. Most cooking classes include instructions on how to make an authentic Guatemalan appetiser, main dish and dessert. Cuscun and La Tortilla are two popular cooking schools that provide a variety of daily classes for tourists. 

 

31. Take a Picture at the Santa Catalina Arch

Santa Catalina Arch is a perfect quick tourist attraction when visiting Antigua, Guatemala. Originally built in the 17th century, Santa Catalina Arch is the one of the most distinguishable landmarks in Antigua, Guatemala. Located only a few blocks from Central Park, it is surrounded by many excellent cafes and restaurants. Grab a coffee, take a picture and enjoy the history.
