History

Antigua, Guatemala was originally founded in 1543 by Spanish settlers. Built in an earthquake-prone region, the town of Antigua has been damaged several times by earthquakes, fires, and flash floods. Due to the instability of the region, the city government decided to move the town to where Guatemala City is today. Even so, a portion of the population stayed behind, resulting in the continued growth of Antigua’s population. In 1979 UNESCO declared Antigua a World Heritage Site, recognizing its historical significance and colonial architecture. Today Antigua has become a popular tourist destination and attracts visitors from all over the world. Not only has Antigua become a foodie paradise, with over 300 restaurants and cafes to choose from, but it is also an important piece of Guatemalan history.

What is the weather like in Antigua, Guatemala?

The temperature in Antigua, Guatemala, is steady year-round, ranging from 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) and 28 degrees Celsius (79°F). During the rainy season, from June to October, rain showers are common in the mid-afternoon to late evening. While in the dry season, from December till April, you can enjoy clear blue skies most days. April is the warmest month with an average maximum temperature of 28°C (82°F). While January is the coldest, with an average maximum temperature of 24°C (75°F). 


How do you travel to Antigua, Guatemala?

Typically, international travelers will fly into Guatemala City and then take one of the following modes of transport to Antigua. Transportation times will vary due to construction and traffic.  

 “Chicken Bus” (30 minutes to 1 hour)

Local transportation buses or “Chicken Buses” are the cheapest form of transportation. Although crowded and not the most comfortable option, a ride from Guatemala City to Antigua only costs Q10 ($1.50). Please keep in mind that taking public transportation from Guatemala City to Antigua can be risky, due to crime. Tourists are discouraged from taking public transportation from Guatemala City to Antigua.

Shared Shuttle Bus (30 minutes to 1 hour)

Shared shuttle buses are a popular form of transportation for international travelers. A ride from Antigua to Guatemala Airport costs $17 to $23 USD, making shared shuttles a safe, comfortable, and economical option.

Uber (30 mins to 1 hour)

An Uber is often more affordable than private transportation or a taxi service. The average cost of an Uber from Guatemala Airport to Antigua is between $15 to $27 USD. Prices will vary depending on the time of day and the number of Uber drivers available. If you are carrying a light, there are also motorcycle Ubers available for under $15 USD.

Private Transportation (1 hour)

Private transportation is an excellent option for those looking for convenience and privacy. At $22 to $60 USD, this option is not always budget-friendly but does allow for bathroom breaks and stops for snacks whenever you wish. 

Helicopter (10 minutes)

If luxury and speed are your style, you can opt for a helicopter ride. A ride costs approximately $1330 USD, making it the most expensive option but also the fastest. Please note that luggage space and passenger capacity are limited.
