The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Lake Atitlán

Lake Atitlán is located in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range, approximately a 3 ½ hour drive from Guatemala City. Fed by two nearby rivers, Lake Atitlán is situated in a volcanic crater and is famous for being the deepest lake in Central America. In 1955 the area around the lake was labelled a National Park, and tourism started to be encouraged in the surrounding Mayan villages. Today Lake Atitlán has become a popular tourist destination for international and local travellers. Visitors and locals are able to access the villages by public boat from the dock at Panajachel, and learn about the local Mayan culture and customs.
